Journal
Free private journal: write dated entries, tag and search them, link references, summarise date ranges and see a timeline. Stays in your browser.
A multi-journal personal writing tool. Create timestamped entries, build
summaries from date ranges, track references, and visualise your journal
as a graph. All data stored locally in your browser.
It is for anyone who wants a private place to write regularly, whether that is a daily diary, a work log or a project record, and to look back over it later.
How to use it
- Create a journal and give it a name. You can keep as many as you like, for example one for your life and one for work.
- Write in the entry box and press Ctrl+Enter to save. Each entry has a date and time you can change, and tags. Ctrl+Shift+N jumps back to the entry box.
- Use shortcuts while you write. Type /t to add tags. Type /n to create a reference, such as a document number and title, and drop it into the entry. Type /r to link to a reference you already made.
- Find old entries with the search box, or filter by tag. Long journals are split into pages, and Settings sets how many characters fit on a page.
- Open the Summaries tab to build a summary for a date range. Choose the dates, pick which entries and earlier summaries to include, then copy them to the clipboard, optionally with a ready-made prompt for an AI assistant. Paste its answer back in, or write your own, and save it.
- Open the Graph tab to see your entries and summaries laid out as a timeline.
Your data
Journals, entries, summaries and references are kept in your browser's IndexedDB on this device. There is no account, and nothing is uploaded unless you turn on cloud sync. They are not encrypted and there is no passcode, so anyone using the same browser profile on this device can open them.
Cloud sync is optional. You can connect Google Drive or OneDrive, and your journals are saved as a file in your own cloud account. The app syncs when you open it, when you return to the tab and when you come back online, so use Sync Now after a long writing session if you want it uploaded straight away.
Import and Export (JSON, for one journal or all of them) gives you a file backup you control. Clearing your browser's site data deletes the journals on that device, so export now and then or connect sync.
The tool can be installed as an app and opens without a connection.
Questions
Does an AI read my journal? Only if you choose. The Summaries tab copies selected entries to your clipboard with a prompt, and you decide where to paste them.
Can I move a journal to another device? Use cloud sync, or export on one device and import on the other.
